A solid 18 carat pink gold automatic Omega dress watch. This is a luxury and classic offering from one of the biggest names in watch making; Omega. Omega were a market leader in dress watches from the mid-20th Century, in a good way. A simple and clean case design frames this light silver dial. This simplicity of the watch is elevated with the applied solid 18 carat pink gold mix of arrow head, diamond and Arabic applied hour markers and clean dauphine hands. The watch has the added complication of having the subsidiary seconds set just above the 6 o'clock marker. The dial has a chapter ring applied in fine black printing which site more centrally on the dial as opposed to running around the dial’s edge. The design of the sub seconds dial is classic with the engraved concentric circle pattern running throughout it. Below this, at the foot of the dial, is the original “Swiss Made” printing. The Omega name is also printed in the same black stamping with the iconic Omega logo applied in solid 18 carat pink gold. There is also the addition of the word “Chronometer” on the logo stack. This means that the movement was timed at the rigorous Swiss chronometer timing standards. For a watch to earn the title of "chronometer", the movement has to pass a very strict battery of test under very strict control at the most renowned official testing organization, the C.O.S.C (Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres). The testing last for 15 consecutive days. For the first ten days, the movements are tested in five positions at 20 degrees Centigrade. Three of the positions are vertical: 3 o'clock left, 3 o'clock up, and 3 o'clock down. Two test are horizontal: dial up and dial down. After that, the movement is left in the horizontal, dial up position, and the temperature is lowered to 4 degrees Celsius for one day. Then it is raised back to 20 degrees Celsius for one day. Then the temperature is increased to 36 degrees Celsius. For the last two days of the test, the movement is moved back to vertical 3 o'clock left position and the temperature is lowered back to 20 degrees Celsius. The watch is presented in good, original condition. The case appears to be lightly polished. The lugs are sharp and crisp. Many cases at this time and later on were contracted and made in the US. However, this is an original Swiss made case, hence why it is in 18 carat, and not 14 carat gold. The original dial does have a few marks which add a solid vintage feel to it. It is better to have the original dial, as opposed to a later re-finished dial. It is by no means perfect, so please bear this in mind, but it is by no means bad. The watch is, after all, now 72 years old! The watch is powered by the brass finished bumper wind caliber 333 Omega movement. The movement was used across the board by Omega in a number of time only watches since its launch in 1940. This example is in excellent condition and keeping very good time. Being pink gold, this is a much more rare option from this period. Most watches were yellow, so this was very much an upgrade. If you are looking for a classic vintage watch with great character it will fit the bill.
