A stainless steel Jules Jurgensen with automatic movement. This very versatile and handsome watch combines a lot of classic watch. The case design is very simple, clean but strong. The twisted lyre lugs are similar to those found on the early Omega Speedmaster. It wears large on the wrist, thanks in part to the large dial expanse and finer case. It was designed in the 1960’, as such has a real “Jetsons” look. The dial is a clean and handsome silver colour with split baton hour markers at the 12, 6 and 9 position. There is a date window at the three o'clock position, which has a quick set function, thanks to the movement allowing one to move between 3am and 9pm. The dial and hand dauphine set are also non-luminous making this watch a more ""dress"" style. However, the versatile design of this watch makes it just as comfortable on the wrist in a polo shirt and chinos.
The Jurgensen name has been synonymous with watchmaking excellence since the 1700s, tracing its origins to the family's progenitor, Jorgen Jurgensen. As a young farmhand, Jorgen fled his rural roots to become an apprentice to a renowned watchmaker in Locle, Switzerland, eventually becoming his business partner. Jorgen's son, Urban, followed in his father's footsteps, honing his craft under the tutelage of some of the era's most celebrated watchmakers across Switzerland, Paris, and London.
By the time Jules Jurgensen was born in 1808, the family legacy in horology was firmly established. Jules further elevated the Jurgensen prestige, designing and patenting innovative pocket watch mechanisms that became industry benchmarks, gracing many American timepieces through the late 1800s. The Jurgensen name continued to echo throughout Europe well into the mid-20th century, even after the brand was sold to an American company in the late 1930s. Though the company's in-house production capabilities had diminished by 1960, leading to greater reliance on Swiss contract parts, the Jurgensen commitment to crafting unique and captivating timepieces never wavered, ensuring the family's enduring legacy among horological enthusiasts.
The watch is powered y a Swiss made 17 jewel automatic movement protected by this handsome screw back steel case. The watch overall is in superb original condition, with the case being unpolished and keeping good time. The original acrylic crystal is present. It does show some wear, but it is the original one fitted 60 years ago, and it features the rare magnification window at the 3 o’clock position. So, the decision was made to leave it.
