Founded in the 16th century, Marling & Evans is one of England’s oldest active weaving mills. We’re proud to partner with this historic English mill to produce Cheviot Tweed — an exclusive assortment of tweeds made just for J. Press and available now in Made-to-Measure as well as ready-to-wear sport coats and chore coats.
Join us Thursday, October 9th, for a celebration of this partnership at our New York flagship. The first fifty guests will be receive a special gift from the mill: a tweed gnome. (Yes, gnome). These gnomes are a Marling & Evans tradition, made at the mill using leftover fabric scraps. We will also launch a limited-edition cap emblazoned with Marling & Evans’ iconic red seal, and all guests will receive 20% off Made-to-Measure orders.
Marling & Evans weaves tweed without dyeing it. Inspired by the desire to produce tweed with minimal environmental impact, the historic mill has developed a process for weaving colors and textures into the fabric. They create unique patterns from different colored wools: the black and white of the spotted coat of the Jacob sheep, and the deep black of the Welsh Black, for example. The Shetland sheep offers the greatest color variety: black, brown, gray melange, and beige melange—to name just a few. Marling & Evans tweed wool is never chemically treated or dyed, and only natural soap is used in the finishing process.
We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, October 9th! In the meantime, an assortment of J. Press Cheviot tweed sport coats and chore coats are available online and in our stores now.
