Description
A stainless steel automatic dress watch from International Watch Company Schaffhausen, or IWC as they are more familiarly known. This is perhaps one of their most beloved vintage models. Containing a real workhorse, and reliable in house movement, this watch is very versatile. It is more of a dress watch, but due to the larger size, and thicker lugs it can also be worn more casually. The dial is very much in the spirit of IWC. Clean, uncluttered and elegant with the more desirable fully written out script logo sitting just below the 12 o'clock marker. The slightly bronze coloured silver dial has the brushed sunburst finish which catches light beautifully. It has a very clean layout with simple long applied baton markers on the hours, a relief minute track similar to the likes of Patek Philippe on their Calatrava models, the date window large and clear at the 3 o'clock position and fully signed. Below the 6 o'clock marker is the ""T Swiss T"" mark for Swiss made with Tritium luminous material applied. Although, in this case, this is a ""no lume"" dial. It is quite common across watch making for them to stamp all dials this way, and then use some without any luminous material. A clear indication that this is not as a result of the plots falling off, or being cleaned off is the fact that the original handset is also lume free. The dial is all original and not re-finished and free from any damage or discolouration. The stainless steel snap back case is in excellent condition. Perhaps unpolished as all the lines of the case remain very strong, with no edges softened, as can quite often be the case. Perhaps the sides have been lightly polished, but this could also be from 60 years of wear. The original winding crown is present with the iconic IWC fish logo intact. The watch is powered by the last in house automatic movement that IWC made; the caliber 854, and in this case 8541, with date. This is a much loved movement for IWC fans, and marks the last time they were used in models before being replaced by Jaeger LeCoultre and ETA ebauches. The watch is in excellent condition throughout. Keeping great time, and really represents an opportunity to have a vintage watch that is both handsome and durable, along with being versatile.
